Frequently Asked Questions About Acupuncture

1. Does Acupuncture Work? (common question!)

Answer:

Yes. Acupuncture has been an integral therapy of a medical system (traditional Chinese medicine) that has been used to diagnose, treat, and prevent illness for more than 23 centuries. Acupuncture can remedy acute or chronic ailments, relieve pain, enhance recuperative powers, and strengthen the immune system.

2. How many treatments will I need?

Answer:

The number of treatments you require is related exactly to the condition for which you seek treatment (i.e.; one, three, bi-weekly, monthly, quarterly or “as needed”). Generally, the more recent a problem, the less treatments needed. If a disease is chronic, usually a small series of treatments is required to get you to an acceptable quality of life, then, from there, acupuncture is used to keep you “tuned up,” on a monthly/seasonal basis.

3. What is the education of an acupuncturist?

Answer:

An acupuncturist is licensed from the Board of Medicine and must pass a national exam after graduating from an accredited acupuncture/Oriental medicine school. Oriental Medical School is approximately 4 ½ years long and is the epitome expert education on the practical and theoretic use of acupuncture.

4. Does Virginia Beach Acupuncture use herbal therapies or give information about nutrition?

Answer:

We believe this information is vital for continued health. At Virginia Beach Acupuncture we use scientific nutritional understanding from the west (understanding of supplements/vitamins/minerals) and energetic food therapy concepts from the East (foods that change internal processes), along with traditional herbal therapy (traditional Chinese medicine) to facilitate your body to reverse many disease processes. All suggestions are individually based.

5. What is my first treatment like?

Answer:

Treatments are relaxing and rewarding. There is a comprehensive evaluation including question/answer, medical history, and the observation of most physical signs or symptoms (includes traditional tongue and pulse diagnosis). After your unique circumstances are understood, we begin treatment on your first visit. The actual treatment, after the consultation, will last approximately 30 minutes.   In total, plan your first visit to be about 1 ½ hours in length.
